For two days in a row, Paul and I have…
Road Tunes
Part of our preparation for travel was to rip all of our CDs. We did a little shopping and settled on DMP3 Digital for this purpose. We originally chose them because they were based in Seattle, but we learned they have moved to Kansas (not that there’s anything wrong with that…). DMP3 Digital have been responsive and helpful in their correspondence with us.
Our music and our CDs are on their way back to us now. They said they ripped 677 CDs, with 7554 songs, for over 23 days of music. The music totals almost 200GB! That should be almost enough for our flight to Thailand!
DMP3 lets the customer choose two formats in their premium service. We chose FLAC and 320K MP3 as our targets. 320K seemed like a good choice for iPod use, and FLAC has two virtues: lots of open-source, vendor-independent software support, and specifically live transcoding support in Synology servers, which I hope to set up when we settle down next year.
Well – how was the flight?? Did the music keep you entertained? Missing you terribly, Paula! (Paul, miss you too!)
Flights were long, but got a little sleep. The plane was configured 2-4-2 and we had sat in a two part, so that made it nicer. They brought around plenty of water on both flights. Missing pinging you on IM 🙂
Paul and Paula: hope you are having an amazing trip. I look forward to the 2-D travelogue.
Out of curiosity, how much did the DVD conversion set you back, including associated fees such as shipping, handling, insurance, etc.? Have you similarly explored digitizing photo negatives and prints?
No rush on the reply.
Thanks,
MC
Btw, I meant CDs. But since you are omniscient, why not include all media. Vinyl, 8track, 4track, vhs, beta, laserD, r2r too.
Hey, Mike. I have not looked into other media, except to ask my CD guys to do DVDs. They turned me down.
The cost of the CD project was a little over a buck a CD. I bought their premium cataloging option, which seems to have done a great job.
You can send them a drive for your ripped content, or you can buy a new drive from them. I bought a cool Porsche Design drive from them. The PD drive has the bonus feature of extreme sharpness in the hand. I feel like I could cut myself if I reach into my bag with too much gusto.
